Literature Question

Literature Question. I want you to read all the pages and do the following.
Summarize the reading (share significant or key points about the author(s) and what explain what the reading is about). I want you to talk about the author Lorraine Hansberry and her early life and achievement. And then summaries her novel A Raisin in the Sun.

Literature Question

Literature Question. Required Length: At a minimum, the essay ends somewhere on the fourth and the works
cited page comprises the fifth page. The maximum length for this essay is seven full pages plus
a works cited page as page eight. (Essays outside this range may be penalized.)
(The article are in the files “Dream of The Rood” and “Holy Sonnet 4”. I know there are other Holy Sonnets but I chose just NUMBER 4.
Present your answer to the
central question as an interpretive thesis, included in an introductory paragraph. Focus your
response on the text (or texts) named in the prompt you have chosen. Persuasively support
your thesis through close reading (careful analysis of specific textual details).
Observations about the text are useful as evidence; paraphrases are not the same as
interpretations. If you attempt to summarize or even to analyze too many parts of your
chosen text, you will almost certainly do too little close reading and analysis of specific
details to be successful. Make sure that you are confining yourself to a specific interpretive
focus.
Prompt: Choose one poem by John Donne and any other text that you have read which
has a religious element. Compare what these two texts emphasize about religion. (Note:
just because a text emphasizes one element of religion, this does not mean that it denies
other elements.)
For my essay I chose the “Holy Sonnet IV” by John Donne and “Dream of the Rood”. Both of these readings contain a religious element in their articles.
The thesis will
depend a lot on whether you are comparing two similar emphases or two different ones.
Answer either How does having two different ways to emphasize this element
complicate a reader’s understanding of it? or How do these two different elements
work together to provide a fuller picture of religious belief?
YOUR ESSAY WILL BE STRONGEST IF IT ENGAGES PRIMARILY WITH THE
BOLDED QUESTION.
Whichever option you choose, you are presented with a “why does it matter” question. The
best thesis sentences will answer this question but will not simply say “it matters because X.”
Suppose that your draft thesis sentence is: It matters that knowledge can be defined as beauty
because this shows that gaining it requires thinking outside the box.
Research and Secondary Sources: This paper does not require you to do any research, and I
strongly recommend that you not take on any hunting for explanations or published criticism.
However, should you make use in any way (even just reading them to help your thinking) of
any sources (e.g. a Wikipedia entry, a paraphrase, a work of literary criticism), then you
absolutely must document your use in accordance with MLA citation practices. Failure to do
so constitutes plagiarism and will earn a zero for assignment. A works cited page is
required for this essay, whether or not you use secondary sources.
How to get a “A” on this essay.
A. 100% The essay displays a sophisticated analysis of the assigned and chosen text in support
of an insightful thesis which makes an interpretive claim responsive to the bolded question
in the chosen prompt. Well-chosen evidence is specific, skillfully integrated into the essay,
and analytically developed to show a supportive relationship to the thesis. Each paragraph is
coherently focused and logically organized; each paragraph’s topic is clear and specific;
transitional devices and effective paragraph organization facilitate logical flow within each
paragraph and throughout the essay. MLA citation style (in text citations and works cited
page) is followed without error. Sentences demonstrate control and skillful variation. Diction
is precise, vivid, and in an appropriately formal register (including maintaining academic
formality by avoiding contractions, passive voiced constructions, and the second person
pronoun). The essay has been carefully edited and has no or very few errors in grammar,
punctuation, typography or spelling.

Literature Question

Literature Question. Science and Technology play a central role in assuring our survival and enormous success as a species. However, your readings for this week point out that this progress is the product of contentious debates, competing world views, and revolutionary paradigm shifts. Over time, certain views do eventually prevail. Genetically evolved technology is based, in part, on finding solutions to key problems through the process of biological evolution (see the Tedtalk video for this week). With Kuhn, your readings and video clips for this week in mind, please answer the following questions:
Can believers in Intelligent Design embrace the incredibly promising and innovative solutions outlined in Luke Bawazer’s Tedtalk while rejecting Darwin’s theory of evolution? Explain why or why not.
How does the science discussed by Bawazer relate to Bronowski’s belief about science as imaginative and creative?
Does Bawazer’s discussion of the dawning of a new scientific paradigm mean the same thing Kuhn means by paradigm shift?
Your response must include references to the essays by Bronowski, Kuhn, and Wilson. Feel free to include your own research (academic sources). Your response, in either essay form or question and answer format, should be a minimum of 750 words. Use proper citation and list your references.
For the purposes of citing this week’s pdf readings, please cite the 13th edition of the Norton Reader, which includes all three readings. Since the page numbers of the available pdf copies may differ from the original Norton Reader selection just cite the paragraph number.

The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town by John Grisham

This MUST be analytically driven work. Ideally, you will strive to organize your work around a central claim about the novel. You MUST aim to do more than merely summarize the plot of the book. You MUST aim to try to put the work in its cultural and historical context. You SHOULD also strive to understand how the structuring of power in the book shapes it overall. Because this is a multimodal presentation, you MUST aim to use the tools at your disposal in effective and sophisticated ways. Simply slapping together some powerpoint and summarizing the novel will garner, at best, a C.

Research and Citation
This assignment does not require that you do research, but many of you may find it useful to do some research. If you find material that helps illuminate the work and helps you refine your ideas, that’s great! Make sure to give these authors the credit they deserve by making it clear when you are using their ideas.

Elements
The focus of your presentation is on analytical engagement with the novel. In the process of your analysis, you will want to make sure to include the following elements:

Characterize the detective hero as he/she relates to the kinds of detective heroes we’ve discussed this term.
Place the novel in its cultural and historical context by discussing the setting of the novel and pertinent information about the author’s background.
Summarize elements of the plot, to they extent that they help inform your arguments related to the above issues. This is not a book summary or a “book report.” Work that only or mostly summarizes the plot of the novel typically receives, at best, a B.
space

For Consideration
Use the following list of questions to generate ideas for grounding your presentation in critical engagement. I do not necessarily expect you to answer all of these questions in your work. The goal here is to give you an idea of what kinds of things you might consider as you work.

Who is the detective hero? Can she be characterized easily as one of the types of detective heroes we’ve discussed? How so or why not? What, if anything, distinguishes this hero from other examples we’ve seen in this category? What social attitudes does this hero possess and how might that relate to the novel’s cultural and historical context?

What social, cultural, or political concerns might this novel be overtly or implicitly addressing? Are there particular social dynamics that are specific to the context of the novel? How do these dynamics shape who has power and how they use it? Are there, for example, social dynamics that made the victim(s) powerless and vulnerable? Are there ways in which the author strives to get us to understand the criminals point of view?

How does this novel work as an example of detective fiction? Are there any major departures from what you have come to expect of this genre? Does it ever push against expectations?

You may be tempted to talk about whether or not you “like” the novel. DON’T! Instead, try to develop a more nuanced critical framework. What works and doesn’t here? Where? Why? How? Your emotional response to the work (whether or not you “like” it) is usually a good way to acknowledge where to do critical work, but don’t start and end just by talking about what you like.
