PROMPT:Many patients and doctors are disillusioned with the current state of medical care. Patients often feel abandoned and invisible, whether they are in the hospital or in a doctor’s office. Doctors, especially primary care doctors, are disillusioned and stressed. Nurses are stressed, especially if they work in hospitals, and often have tense relationships with physicians.
Some doctors think that the solution to this miserable state of affairs is to go back to “the good old days” when doctors were in clearly and totally in charge. They resist any attempts to change the dominant medical values that have traditionally been central to medical training and practice. They cling to clinical experience as the main guide to diagnosis and treatment. Much of what you read/watched in modules 12 and 13 has explored many reasons why this position is (a) not possible and (b) not desirable.
Write a post in which you explain why “going back to the way it used to be” or “putting doctors back in charge” (medical dominance) is not the way to get better patient care and in which you explore new models for organizing healthcare. Draw on The Doctor and other material from modules 11, 12 and 13.

Explain how these changes could combat disillusionment, lessen stress and conflict, and improve the quality of healthcare outcomes (that is, help patients to become healthier and live longer).

In your concluding paragraph, reflect on and identify the many forces that might keep any of these changes from being implemented and making healthcare better. What are the major barriers to positive change?
