JOT DOWN DETAILED OBSERVATIONS ABOUT O’S TWO ARTWORKS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS ASSIGNMENT IS TO FOCUS ON HOW THE ARTWORKS PERFORM, AND HOW WE MIGHT EXPERIENCE AND TALK ABOUT A GALLERY INSTALLATION IN TERMS OF PERFORMANCE THEORY. I PROVIDE THE RECORDED CLASS SESSION TO GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO HEAR OR TALK ABOUT THEIR WORK IN CONVERSATION WITH ME, AND TO GIVE YOU MORE CONTEXT FOR THEIR ARTISTIC PRACTICE, IDEAS AND RESEARCH QUESTIONS.
Attune both to details of the artwork and to your own physical responses, emotions, feelings, as you study these works. Include notes that describe your embodied responses to the artwork.
UPLOAD TWO PAGES OF NOTICING NOTES. NOTES SHOULD BE DETAILED AND SHOW SIGNIFICANT EFFORT AND ENGAGEMENT WITH THE ARTWORK. NOTES SHOULD ADDRESS KEY FEATURES OF THE ARTWORK. MAKE SURE NOTES ARE NOT QUICKLY THROWN TOGETHER.
Things to keep in mind:
PERFORMER/AUDIENCE: Who is performing? Who is audience? Do these roles shift or blend?
STAGE: Is there a stage? Where? Is there a backstage? An offstage? A centerstage? Does the stage have physical boundaries?
SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPS: How is the audience positioned in relationship to the performers? How are the performers and audience positioned in relationship to the stage?
MOVEMENT: Are there physical actions or movement behaviors that stand out–significant, emphasized, repeated, exaggerated? Are the actions performed by one or multiple people? Are the physical actions of the audience important? Are there actions performed by both performers and audience? What specific parts of the body are moving (limbs, hips, torso, back, joints, facial organs, hair, etc.)? How can you describe the movement for someone who has never seen the performance? (consider speed, weight, levels from low to high to airborne, eye focus, direction in space, duration from short to long, etc.). COSTUMES: What are the costumes and who wears them? What colors, textures, materials?
PROPS: Are there important props or set pieces? How are the props used? Who is using the props, the performers or audience or both?
LIGHTING AND SOUND
YOUR BODILY RESPONSES: Do you experience any specific physical/bodily responses to the performance? Where in your body? How can you describe the physical response?
YOUR EMOTIONAL RESPONSES: What emotions do you feel as you experience the performance? Are the emotions multiple? Are there deep emotions? How might you describe your emotional response?
