Locke and Rousseau

Answer all three questions. Use the author’s language to make your points – cite the text with some frequency. When you quote from the text please include page numbers.

Compose your essays in the following manner: introduce the question, provide a summary of the main points, then identify which issues you will address in your answer (what’s your point of view) and why you feel it is significant. Be specific, detailed and clear in your answers. Each answer should be about two pages. It’s up to you how long you want to make your answers.

1. From Locke (Social Contract Theory:Second Treatise), why does civil society form? What rights do individual’s give up and which rights to the keep (gain)? What is Locke’s understanding of property? On what basis can a person claim to own something?

2. Consider Rousseau (Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality among Men) on human progress (Part Two, page 288). What does he describe? What are the effects of this process (positive/negative)? What are the sources of inequality? To what does Rousseau attribute the origins of inequality in political society? What do you think about Rousseau’s general description of man in society?
